It was a pleasure to spend a November afternoon with Anushka Christian, owner of much-loved Rotterdam multi-ethnic hair salon Glamaty. Anushka invited her mother Christina to be part of the shoot, in whose salon in Sint Maarten she grew up spending time in and learning her trade.
Anushka was ready to create a set of brand images to use to promote her existing business, her growing YouTube channel Best Hair Ever, and a new online space for natural and relaxed hair. She wanted to project joy, confidence and success through her photos, to instil trust in her clients. She chose three different locations - the salon, the surrounding streets in Rotterdam Centraal and the cafe at co-working hub Spaces Hofplein (many thanks to the team there for letting us use the space).
I first heard of Glamaty when, new to Rotterdam, I asked in a local Facebook group which hairdressers people recommended, and Anushka's name was mentioned many times. So it was rewarding to work with a much loved local business that strives to be inclusive - catering to all hair types and textures, unlike many other salons in the Netherlands.
As usual, our shoot was packed with variety. Showing Anushka in a range of urban settings from brightly painted murals to concrete walls, in her salon sitting with her mother, cutting and styling hair, as well as working at her laptop and soaking up the cafe atmosphere.
