Rebecca, who is botha freelance project manager and photographer, wanted creative portraits that showed both her professional and creative side. She chose Katendrecht in Rotterdam as the backdrop - home to Rotterdam's shipping industry and now undergoing rapid development, including the building of the new museum of migration.

Creative portraits in Rotterdam

I met Rebecca for the first time earlier in the year at Creative Mornings, where I was giving a talk about how business photography can help creatives to be more visible with their work. We kept in touch ever since and I was so pleased when she contacted me to book a business photography session.

Before the photoshoot we talked about what aspects of her personality she wanted to convey through the photos, how she wanted to use them practically and how we could bring these things to life through the location, posing, and the style of photography.

Big skies and warm coffee

The day of the shoot was a typical Rotterdam day. Big grey skies and wind. Oh my god - the wind! I'm used to dealing with all sorts of different weather conditions, but I think long hair and strong winds are my biggest enemies. Luckily we got some great photos and were both happy to retreat to cafe Kopisuesu for some warmth and a break from the howling storm!

I love the variety within this series of images. Rebecca was very keen to use all the interesting corners of Katendrecht as a canvas and did a great job in front of the camera.

We talked about the local political campaigning that Rebecca did in the run-up to the Dutch elections (still too painful an outcome to talk about), about our shared love of photography and where she gets her inspiration from.

What happened next

Rebecca was thrilled with her photos and immediately updated her social profiles (always a good sign and something I enjoy!). Here’s what she said on LinkedIn afterwards:

Having your photos taken when you're a photographer. Absolutely!

I chose Sarah because of her personal approach (and because it's still exciting to have your photo taken yourself) and especially for her ability to bring together creativity, business and the everyday.

Very happy with the result ❤️
